Manfred Gentz (born January 22, 1942 in Riga ) is a German lawyer and manager.

education

Manfred Gentz ​​studied law at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Lausanne from 1961 to 1965 . In 1965 he passed the first state examination . After his time as an assistant at the Free University of Berlin , he worked as a trainee lawyer , did his doctorate in law and passed his second state examination in 1970.

Activities at Daimler-Benz / Daimler-Chrysler

From 1970 he worked as a junior management trainee at Daimler-Benz . After four years he changed to the post of assistant to the director of human resources and another four years later he took on the post of director of human resources and social affairs. From 1982 he was a member of the Commercial Vehicles division and a year later he was promoted to the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz AG, initially as a deputy member of the Board of Management. From 1985 he was a permanent member of the Board of Management and until 2004 was responsible for various areas at Daimler-Chrysler AG, including finance, human resources and controlling. In 1990 Gentz ​​also took over the position of CEO of Daimler-Benz Interservices AG in Berlin.

Gentz ​​was a member of the supervisory boards of DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG and DaimlerChrysler Services AG.

In addition to his activities for Daimler-Benz, Gentz ​​held or still holds various other positions. He was a member of the supervisory board of Bewag AG , Deutsche Hypothekenbank Frankfurt-Hamburg AG , DWS Investment GmbH (until April 2009), Hannoversche Lebensversicherung AG (1985–2005), Agrippina-Versicherung AG (1987–1995), the Zurich Beteiligungs-AG (1996-2005), of Zurich Financial Services (where he was also Chairman of the Board), the Adidas AG and currently the Deutsche Börse AG .

Since September 2013 he has also been chairman of the government commission on the German Corporate Governance Code .

He is also President of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Germany and was Vice-President of the IHK in Berlin.

Gentz ​​also took on many honorary positions , mainly promoting science . He was chairman of the board of trustees of the Technical University of Berlin , chairman of the board of the economic society of the Humboldt University . He also chaired the board of trustees of the TSB Technologiestiftung Berlin (until 2006), the supervisory board of the Institute for Management and Technology and the board of directors of the Hanns Martin Schleyer Foundation . In addition, he was or is a member of the board of trustees of the Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz Foundation , a member of the initiative giving Europe a soul and a member of the supervisory board of WISTA Management GmbH, as well as a member of the board of the Aspen Institute .

Awards

Gentz ​​was awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. rer. Oec. Hc) from the Technical University of Berlin in 2000 and two years later he was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . In 2017 he received an honorary doctorate from the Leipzig Graduate School of Management (HHL).
