Manfred Glöckner (born January 18, 1936 in Zschopau ; † October 8, 2005 there ) was a German canoeist , canoe trainer and most recently Honorary President of the Brandenburg State Canoeing Association.
Life
Manfred Glöckner , who comes from the Saxon Ore Mountains , became interested in canoeing while attending school after the end of the Second World War . Since 1948 he has been practicing canoe slalom in Zschopau on the river of the same name. He was organized in the canoe department of the company sports association (BSG) of the motorcycle factory in Zschopau . From 1954 Glöckner trained in the DHfK sports club in Leipzig.
In 1955 he played for the first time in a canoe world championship , which took place in what was then Yugoslavia .
He was world champion in canoeing four times, namely in 1957 in Augsburg (twice), in 1959 in Genoa and in 1963 in Spittal .
In 1962 he successfully completed his sports studies at the DHfK Leipzig as a certified sports teacher and from then on worked as a canoe trainer in the Army Sports Club Vorwärts (ASK) Potsdam and the Sports Club (SC) Berlin-Grünau . As a selection trainer for the DKSV, he led female athletes to Olympic and world championship titles (such as Birgit Fischer ).
On July 14, 1990, he was elected President of the newly founded State Canoe Association Brandenburg. He was in office as such until 2005 and then handed over the office to his successor Henry Schiffer.
With significant participation by Glöckner, a federal base of the German Canoe Association and one of six state bases of the State Canoe Association of Brandenburg were established in Potsdam in 1992 .
In March 2005 Manfred Glöckner was made Honorary President, seven months later he died at the age of 69.
Honors
In 1957 he received the title of Master of Sports .
In 1963 he was awarded the GDR Medal of Merit .
In his honor, the Manfred Glöckner memorial regatta has been held annually in Werder since 2006, with numerous participants, primarily from the youngsters' sport.
