Manfred Karduck (* 1939 in Wegberg ) is a German priest , teacher and choir and orchestra leader. Together with the Overbach youth choir, which he founded at the Haus Overbach grammar school , he made a significant contribution to the development and development of sacropop from the late 1960s . He is also the founder of the Overbacher Kirmes . The city of Jülich honored him with the city's ring of honor in 2007.

Life

Karduck was an orphan at a young age and attended schools in Schleiden and Overbach. He founded his first choir while still at school. At the age of 19 he entered the religious community of the Oblates of St. Franz von Sales and studied theology in Paderborn . After his ordination in 1966, he came to the Catholic educational institution Haus Overbach near Jülich as an educator and teacher, where he was initially prefect in the boarding school of the boys' high school. In Haus Overbach he founded several choirs and orchestras with the support of the music teacher Günther Kutz at the time. From 1971 he also studied music in order to later teach religion and music in Overbach.

Between 1969 and the mid-1980s, Karduck's youth choir recorded numerous records for the Young Missionaries Circle (KIM), which was founded by his brother P. Hubert Leeb and which began to recruit young Catholic priests from Austria Label sales. Besides Karduck composed for the choir a. a. also Ingfried Hoffmann and Peter Janssens . The arrangement of the first publications was initially taken care of by Kutz. The recordings were made in the Rhenus recording studio in Cologne, where Conny Plank was still a freelancer at the time. Karduck and Kutz were able to win some of the musicians who happened to be present because of other recordings, such as Peter Herbolzheimer (arrangement "Schalom", 1973) or Jerry van Rooyen (arrangement "I will always be with you", 1977) to participate in the recordings of their choir thereby clearly gained the influence of jazz and funk . After a youth pilgrimage to Rome in August 1970, Karduck's choir undertook extensive concert activities in churches and on other occasions, which made the choir and the new Christian jazz music it performed more widely known. The concerts of the choir were not without controversy, as its music was much more lively than one was used to from the various beat masses that had been taking place since the mid-1960s . In 1971, the choir participated in the inauguration of the KIM headquarters in Ingolstadt. When KIM founder Leeb turned to mission and development aid in the Brazilian city of Porto do Mato , most of the income from KIM publications flowed into projects in Brazil. In 1973, the chorus afforded the title music for the sacro-pop festival the ZDF . The choir later performed at several Catholic Days .

In addition to his work with the Overbach Youth Choir, Karduck also made a name for himself as the founder of the Overbacher Kirmes . Developed from a colorful afternoon held in 1971, the festival, which the school has taken over since 1981, has developed into one of the largest private events in Jülich, which is attended by several thousand people every year.

In 1979 Karduck founded a wind orchestra in Overbach, which later also included professional musicians. For example, the composer Torsten Herrmann and the opera singer Michael Dahmen played under Manfred Karduck's direction in the so-called Overbach Youth Brass Orchestra during their school days. In 1985 he handed over the leadership of the youth choir to Martin te Laak and in the following years devoted himself mainly to the brass orchestra, with which he also recorded several records until his retirement in 2003.

In the 1985/86 school year he became deputy director of the grammar school, a position he held until his retirement in 2003. From 1991 he was also head of the house and school chaplain in Haus Overbach, which he did for years after retirement until 2011.

In 2007 he was awarded the Ring of Honor of the City of Jülich.

Probably the best-known piece by the Overbach Youth Choir that was written under the direction of Karduck, the Sonnengesang recorded in 1976 with Ingfried Hoffmann , was re-released in 2016 on a compilation of extraordinary Christian music from the 1960s and 1970s.
