Manfred Sommer (MfS employee)

Manfred Sommer (born August 10, 1932 in Dresden ; † May 24, 2011 ) was a German secret service officer (Colonel) of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) and head of the Central Operational Staff of the MfS.

Life

Sommer was born in Dresden in 1932 as the son of a businessman and a saleswoman. After elementary school he learned the profession of printer from 1947. In 1952, Sommer joined the SED . In the same year he found a job in the Grossenhain district office of the MfS. In 1953/54, Sommer attended a one-year course at the secret university of the Ministry for State Security in Potsdam-Eiche and was then transferred to Main Department (HA) V (State Apparatus, Culture, Churches, Underground) of the MfS in Berlin. There he headed Unit V / 5/1. Between 1960 and 1961 he attended the district party school in Cottbus . In 1970, Sommer was transferred to the Central Operational Staff (ZOS), whose deputy head he took over as Colonel from 1980. In 1985 he was appointed head of the ZOS. As a result of the turning point and peaceful revolution in the GDR and the dissolution of the Stasi, Sommer was released in January 1990. Investigations initiated against him in the case of the Erwin Neumann kidnapping were discontinued as no evidence of involvement in the crime could be proven. Sommer lived as a pensioner in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen .
