Manfred Thiel

Manfred Thiel (born June 27, 1917 in Görlitz ; † March 22, 2014 in Heidelberg ) was a German philosopher and poet as well as the founder and managing director of Elpis-Verlag, in which almost all of his books have appeared.

Life

Manfred Thiel came from a middle-class family and studied at the universities of Freiburg , Berlin , Bonn and ultimately with Karl Jaspers in Heidelberg, where he also received his doctorate. From 1947 on he worked as the secretary of the Springer magazine Studium Generale . After they were hired in 1971, he began to work as a private scholar on his multi-volume work method , in which he wrote against the well-known central work Truth and Method by the Heidelberg philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer , which he suspected was behind the discontinuation of the magazine. In addition to his philosophical works, he also wrote poetry , translated from French , polemicized and published the autobiography of Werner Peiner , of which he owned a painting. Thiel, who won a Heidelberg music prize for his piano playing in the 1980s, died in a Protestant nursing home.
