Manfred Ulrich (born June 12, 1949 in Bad Sobernheim ) is a German folk singer , musician , songwriter and composer . He plays the guitar, button harmonica and harmonica. In addition to his musical activities, he was the owner of the publishing house, producer and editor of books with sound carriers.

Career

Manfred Ulrich grew up in Merxheim an der Nahe . In his early school days he got to know the German folk songs , which gave him lasting inspiration. In 1964 he began a three-year apprenticeship as a baker and obtained a journeyman's certificate. Also in 1964 he became a member of the " Nerother Wandervogel " association, which is based at Waldeck Castle in the Hunsrück. This encounter with the Bundestag youth shaped both his personal and musical development and his later work. At the beginning of the 1970s he was called up for the German Armed Forces in Munsterlager / Lüneburger Heide. During this time he began his first public appearances as a “folk singer” in folk clubs, for example at Danny's Pan (Danny Marion) in Hamburg and Düsseldorf.

On his musical path he met artists such as Klaus Hoffmann , Hannes Wader , Otto Waalkes , Ulrich Roski , Hein & Oss Kröher and Ingo Insterburg . In addition to his work as a commercial clerk in Wuppertal, other appearances as a folk singer followed. In 1979 he moved to Neroth in the Eifel region and in 1984 his first record, “Soldiers Demokrats”, was released by Autogram Records, Nottuln.

In 1985 he founded his own publishing house, the Eifelkrone music publishing house. In the same year he met the violinist and multi-instrumentalist Thomas Kagermann at a concert. In 1986 the two founded the “Duo Vulkan” and the first studio recordings and appearances followed in the Eifel, the Moselle and the Rhineland. In 1988 Manfred Ulrich was engaged as an exclusive artist through the record deal with Teldec / East-West-Records (Hamburg). Together with Thomas Kagermann, a new formation with other musicians was brought into being. “Manfred Ulrich and the rascals” were born. They developed a new style of music with traditional folk songs as well as their own songs and presented them in a new modern electric-acoustic guise. Thanks to the special arrangements, well-known melodies were combined with new musical elements and a new and up to then unique sound was created in the folk music scene: “Folk music of the third kind”. Manfred Ulrich and the rascals were pioneers here for other music formations.

Folk singer

Manfred Ulrich (1984)

As a folk singer, Manfred Ulrich is associated with traditional German folk songs. For him, this includes songs of the youth movements, ballads, moritats, mercenary songs, soldiers’s songs, popular songs, artisan and peasant songs, kitchen songs, monastery songs, hunter’s songs and many other folk song sections. From this treasure trove of songs, the first sound carrier recording as a vinyl record was made in 1984, the LP Soldiers Democrats . At the same time he wrote almost 200 compositions with the following content: Moselle songs, Eifel songs, Rhine songs, near songs, romantic songs and craft songs. There followed poem settings, z. B. Texts by the Eifel poet Peter Zirbes , texts by Wilma Herzog and Theo Pauly, descriptions of the homeland of the Vulkaneifel and the town of Gerolstein and the surrounding area. His song “ Daun , Meine Stadt” appeared in 1994 in the Vulkaneifel's homeland yearbook. The music video of the same name “Daun, Meine Stadt” was produced with him as a singer and guitarist in a duet with the soprano Gisela Ginsberg. An article by Matthias Thömmes with the title "In the footsteps of Peter Zirbes" also appeared in the 2002 Heimatjahrbuch on page 70. It is quoted: "In the meantime, various composers have also discovered the beauty of Peter Zirbes' works and found them suitable for setting. One of the first was the popular singer Manfred Ulrich from Neroth, who became known through radio and television. He has been working with Peter Zirbes for years and his work and has already sensitively set 18 poems to music. "
