Mangawhai Harbor is a natural harbor in the Northland region ofthe North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The Mangawhai Harbor is located approximately 46 km south-southeast of Whangarei and around 20 km north-north-east of Wellsford on the east coast of Northland Peninsula . The natural harbor winds a U-shape around a headland on which the place Mangawhai Heads is located and has a branch that branches off to the southeast at Mangawhai . In its longest extension, the natural harbor measures 9.1 km and at its widest point comes to around 940 m. The port entrance, which connects the water with the Jellicoe Channel of the Pacific Ocean , is only 90 wide and the coastline of the natural port measures around 30 km with all its turns. About 400 m east of the harbor entrance is a 0.2 hectare rock called Sentinel Rock .

The headland that separates the natural harbor from the ocean consists of a sand dune up to 900 m wide and around 4 km long, which forms the southern part of the harbor entrance. To the north, hills covered with bushes rise up to an extent of 800 m by 800 m, which rise to just over 100 m . The following part of the lower Mangawhai Harbor is flanked on both sides by white sandy beaches, which offer swimming and water sports. The two arms of the upper part of the natural harbor are overgrown with mangrove trees and bushes in the shore regions .
