Mangawhai is a place in the Kaipara District of the Northland regionon the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name of the place is made up of two parts, " manga " , which means "river" in the Māori language and " whai " , which stands for the chief Te Whai , who after an attack by the Ngāpuhi on the place Pakiri in the area of today's Mangawhai fled.
geography
The place is located around 49 km south-southeast of Whangarei and around 19 km northeast of Wellsford directly on Mangawhai Harbor , which has access to the Pacific Ocean around 5 km northeast of the place . The place is connected to the New Zealand State Highway 1 in terms of traffic via an approximately 13 km long country road leading to the west that meets the highway at Kaiwaka .
population
In the 2013 census, the town and its surrounding area had 1,329 inhabitants, 44.8% more than in the 2006 census. The town itself only had 360 inhabitants.
