Mangawhai Heads is a place in the Kaipara District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The Māori name of the place is made up of two parts, " manga " , which means "river" in the Māori language and " whai " , which stands for the chief Te Whai , who fell after an attack by the Ngāpuhi on the place Pakiri fled to what is now Mangawhai .
geography
The place is located around 46 km south-southeast of Whangarei and around 22 km north-northeast of Wellsford directly on Mangawhai Harbor , which has access to the Pacific Ocean around 1.5 km east of the center . The place is connected to the New Zealand State Highway 1 in terms of traffic via a 17 km long country road leading west via Mangawhai , which meets the highway at Kaiwaka .

In the 2013 census, the town had 1,086 inhabitants, 27.5% more than in the 2006 census.
