Manifesto of the anti-fascist intellectuals
The manifesto of the anti-fascist intellectuals , also known as anti-manifesto , on May 1, 1925 in the newspapers Il Mondo and Il Popolo published with the titles: The protest against the "Manifesto of Fascist intellectuals" and the answer is not fascist intellectuals to the manifesto by Giovanni Gentile .
history
The manifesto was written by Benedetto Croce in response to the manifesto of the fascist intellectuals by Giovanni Gentile . Even the date of publication, Labor Day, responded with a marked contradiction to the publication of the fascist manifesto on Christmas Day in Rome . The manifesto sanctioned Croce's final break with fascism. After the march on Rome and the presentation of the first executive member of the fascist coalition in the Senate, he had voted for confidence in the government of Benito Mussolini , but revoked this decision on June 24, 1924. He hoped that Mussolini would finally break away from national fascist extremism.
The proposal to draft the manifesto had been made to Croce by Giovanni Amendola , who wrote on April 20, 1925:
“Dear Croce, have you read the fascist manifesto for foreign intellectuals? … I met several people today who believe that after the fascist document has been published, we have the right to speak and the duty to respond. What is your opinion? Would you be willing to sign such a document or even write it yourself? "
