The Manistee River is a 373 km long river in the US state of Michigan . It drains an area of 4610 km². The mean discharge at the USGS 04125550 gauge near Wellston is 49 m³ / s.
course
The Manistee River rises in southeast Antrim County at an altitude of 381 m . From there it flows in a predominantly west-southwest direction through the northwestern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. It is dammed up by the Testicular Pyl Dam and the Tippy Dam . The Manistee River flows through Manistee Lake near its mouth and passes the small town of Manistee before flowing into Lake Michigan .
nature and environment
The 41.6 km long lower section of the Manistee River between Tippy Dam and Michigan State Highway 55 Bridge above Manistee Lake has the status of a National Wild and Scenic River and is classified as recreational . The river is popular with anglers and canoeists. In spring and autumn, salmon and steelhead trout (the anadromous migratory form of rainbow trout) can be found in the river . In summer it is mainly glass ey perch and pike that are caught.
