The Mannequin Challenge (from French mannequin "model doll" and English challenge "challenge") was an internet phenomenon that spread from 2016 onwards. A group of people remain motionless in poses that mostly recreate everyday situations. This is usually filmed by a person moving through or around the group. This should give the viewer the impression that the group is a mannequin . Often in the background of the resulting video is the song Black Beatles of US hip-hop - duo Rae Sremmurd recorded.

Emergence

The trend is believed to have started after the posting of a video of the same kind by students at Ed White High School in Florida, Jacksonville in October 2016. This spread rapidly in social networks such as Twitter or Instagram and inspired other groups such as sports clubs or school classes to imitate it.

Prominent participants

Due to the worldwide spread of the trend, celebrities also posed in mannequin challenges in 2016; such as the former members of Destiny's Child , consisting of Beyoncé , Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland . Music producer and DJ Marshmello was able to convince his entire audience to “freeze” at a concert in the Shrine Auditorium . Other prominent participants include Paul McCartney , Taylor Swift , Adele and Britney Spears . The German national soccer team also filmed a mannequin challenge.

Used to create depth maps in image processing

In the context of machine vision and artificial intelligence , around 2000 mannequin challenge videos were used to create depth maps.
