Manzie Johnson
Manzie Isham Johnson (* 19th August 1906 in Putnam in Connecticut ; † 9. April 1971 in New York ) was an American jazz - drummer .
Life
Johnson learned the piano and violin before switching to drums. He became known in 1924 with Willie Grant in Small's Paradise in New York and subsequently worked with June Clark , Fats Waller and Freddie Johnson before he was engaged by Don Redman from 1931 to 1936 . In the further course of his career he played in many stations, since he mastered all styles; there are recordings with Putney Dandridge , Benny Morton , Jelly Roll Morton , Willie Bryant and Sidney Bechet . He also played with Fletcher Henderson , Louis Armstrong , Red Allen and was part of Duke Ellington and Jimmie Lunceford .
During the Second World War he did military service and then returned to the music business, where he enjoyed a good reputation as an accomplished session and band musician.
