Marílson dos Santos ( Marílson Gomes dos Santos ; born August 6, 1977 ) is a Brazilian long-distance runner .

Life

In 2003 and 2005 he won the Corrida Internacional de São Silvestre , the traditional New Year's Eve run in São Paulo.

At the marathon of the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , he finished tenth.

In 2006 he set a Brazilian record in quick succession with 27: 48.49 min over 10,000 meters and a South American record with 13: 19.43 min over 5000 meters . In November 2006 he was the first South American winner in the 37-year history of the New York City Marathon in 2:09:58 h and repeated the victory in 2008 with a time of 2:08:43 h.

In 2007 he ran his personal best of 2:08:37 h in eighth place in the London Marathon and set a South American record over 10,000 meters with 27:28.12 minutes. At the 2007 Road Running World Championships in Udine he finished seventh and was the third non-African to ever beat the hour mark in the half marathon with 59:33 minutes . Not only his end time, but also his 10 km (27:48 min) and 15 km intermediate times (42:15 min) are South American records.

The following year he finished eighth at the World Half Marathon Championships in Rio de Janeiro and repeated his victory in New York City with a time of 2:08:43 h.

A 16th place at the 2009 World Championships marathon in Berlin was followed by a sixth place in London in 2010 and a seventh in New York City. At the end of 2010 he won the Corrida de São Silvestre for the third time. He finished fifth in the 2012 Olympic Marathon in London.

Marílson dos Santos grew up in Ceilândia near Brasília and started running at the age of 15. Like his wife, the middle-distance runner Juliana Paula de Azevedo , he belongs to the Atletismo BM&F association, for which the Olympic bronze medalist Vanderlei de Lima is also active.
