Marc Barbezat

Marc Barbezat (born November 26, 1913 in Lyon ; † April 26, 1999 ibid) was a French publisher , publicist and pharmacist . In 1940 he founded the literary magazine l'Arbalète (The Crossbow) as editor and a publisher of the same name.

Life

Born in Lyon, Marc Barbezat took over the helm of his father's pharmaceutical company in Décines-Charpieu, today the chemical company Gifrer-Barbezat . After being mobilized towards the front at the beginning of the Second World War , the enthusiastic reader launched the magazine l'Arbalète in Lyon in 1940 , and in the following years he relocated the publishing house to the 6th arrondissement , 8 Rue Godefroy. By 1948 it comprised a total of 13 editions, with authors such as Antonin Artaud , Mouloudji , Michel Leiris , Paul Claudel , Raymond Queneau , Jean-Paul Sartre , Ernest Hemingway , Henri Michaux and Louis-René des Forêts. The editions of l'Arbalète edited by Marc Barbezat and Olga Kechelievitch were best known for the publication of the first books by Jean Genet . Marc Barbezat published a total of eleven texts by Genet, including Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs , Miracle de la rose , L'Enfant criminel , before a dispute separated them and the writer worked with the Éditions Gallimard from 1966.

Barbezat married the actress Olga Kechelievitch .

Marc Barbezat was the discoverer and first editor of Jean Genets, the author of Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs , le Miracle de la rose , les Poèmes de 1948 , les Bonnes , le Balcon , les Nègres , les Paravents and a lifelong friend of the author .
