Marcel Mouloudji (born September 16, 1922 in Paris ; † June 14, 1994 ibid) was a French actor and chansonnier who mostly only appeared under his surname Mouloudji .

Life

Mouloudji grew up as the son of a Kabyle and a Breton woman in Paris, where he came into contact with the theater and film scene at an early age. At the age of eleven he took part in his first film. In addition to his diverse artistic training from acting to painting, he developed political commitment at a young age, shaped by his communist father. After eventful years during the Second World War, Mouloudji, just 20 years old, was already writing his memoirs with “Enrico”, for which he received the Prix de la Pléiade in 1945 .

Mouloudji began his singing career as an interpreter of Boris Vian and Jacques Prévert . In 1951 he recorded his first record. In 1952 and 1953 he won the Prix Charles-Cros and in 1953 the Grand Prix du Disque . At the same time, he had long since gained great popularity on the screen. In 1954, he was for we all murderers are as best foreign performer for the British Film Academy Award nominated.

Mouloudji's political commitment led to a first setback in his artistic career during the Indochina War . As a staunch pacifist, he had included Boris Vian's chanson Le déserteur in his program and sang it on the same day that France was defeated in the battle for Điện Biên Phủ . The public reacted indignantly and called for censorship. From then on, Le déserteur was boycotted by the radio stations.

Although still artistically and politically active, Mouloudji could no longer build on his early successes in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1966 he opened a hair salon and devoted more time to painting and writing. Marcel Mouloudji died on June 14, 1994. His last plans, the continuation of his memoirs published 50 years ago and a new album, remained unfinished.

Mouloudji's daughter Annabelle also made a brief career as a singer and actress under her first name.

He sang the multicultural influences in his life in his Chanson Auto-Portrait :

"Catholique par ma mère / Musulman par mon père / Un peu juif par mon fils / Bouddhiste par principle / [...] Athée, oh grâce à Dieu"

"Catholic through my mother / Muselmann through my father / A little Jew through my son / Buddhist on principle [...] / Atheist, oh thank God"
