Marcel Grossmann (born April 9, 1878 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary ; † September 7, 1936 in Zurich ) was a Swiss mathematician and professor at the ETH Zurich .

Life

He attended elementary schools in Basel , then studied mathematics in Zurich and became an assistant to Otto Wilhelm Fiedler . In 1902 he was at Fiedler at the University of Zurich with a thesis the metric properties of collinear structures About doctorate . From 1901 to 1905 he was a teacher in Frauenfeld and later in Basel. In 1907 he became professor for descriptive geometry and geometry of the location at the ETH. Grossmann was a co-founder of the Swiss Mathematical Society in 1910 , of which he was also president in 1916/1917. In 1927 Grossmann had to give up his professorship due to a disease of multiple sclerosis , from which he died in Zurich in 1936.

plant

The physicist Albert Einstein was a fellow student and close friend of Grossmann. In Einstein's dissertation from April 1905 there is a dedication for Marcel Grossmann. Einstein turned to him again and again with mathematical questions, and the two also published some works together, for example B. 1913 the draft of a generalized theory of relativity and a theory of gravitation , to which Einstein contributed the physical part and Grossmann the mathematical part.

Honors

Physicists and astronomers have been meeting every three years since 1975 at the so-called Marcel Grossmann Meeting , where current developments and advances in theoretical and experimental general relativity , gravity and relativistic field theories are presented and discussed.
