Marcel Wanders (born July 2, 1963 in Boxtel / Netherlands ) is a Dutch designer .

Life

Marcel Wanders was born south of Amsterdam in Boxtel in 1963 . Born in the Netherlands, he studied in Maastricht and Hasselt in Belgium and graduated from the Art Academy in Arnhem in 1988 . He then worked as a freelance designer for 4 years. In 1992 Wanders became a partner of Waac's Design & Consults in Rotterdam . In 1995 he founded his own design office "Wanders Wonders". In 2001 the designer ceded part of his office, from which the now very well-known company Moooi emerged. "Wanders Wonders" is an independent group of companies in the field of product design . Here Wanders still designs for well-known companies such as British Airways , Boffi, Cappellini, Droog Design, Flos SpA , Cassina , Magis and Moooi.

Works

In 1996, Wanders designed one of his most famous products, the "Knotted Chair". This chair gave the designer the breakthrough in the international design industry. Another design that distinguishes the designer is the "BLO" table lamp. The special thing about this lamp is that it can be switched on or off by blowing. Wanders' works are exhibited in various museums. These include, for example, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York .

In 2000, Marcel Wanders co-founded the design brand Moooi as Art Director and had a strong influence on the company's design.

In 2008 Marcel Wanders designed the entire interior of the Hotel Kameha Grand Bonn . Wanders emphasizes the uniqueness of the Life & Style Hotel on the Bonner Bogen with its neo-baroque interior design with a love of detail . A special highlight are the themed suites he created , which cater to the individual needs and wishes of the guests - regardless of whether it is a “workaholic suite” with all the functions and equipment of a modern office or the “play hard suites” with putting green, pinball machine and Wii console. The hotel, designed by Wanders, opened in November 2009.

Awards

Wanders has won numerous awards for its products . For example, he won the Rotterdam Design Prize (public prize) for the “Knotted Chair”. In 2000 Wanders received the “Alterpoint Design Award”. In 2001, Wanders was nominated in the “Designer of the Year” category.

In 2010, Wanders received the MIPIM Award in the Hotels and Tourist Resorts category for the interior design of the Kameha Grand Bonn, alongside the architect Karl-Heinz Schommer .
