Marcello de Zaffiri Duarte Mathias (also Marcello Duarte Mathias , born February 8, 1938 in Santa Isabel , Lisbon ) is a writer and former diplomat from Portugal .

Life

Mathias was born in the municipality of Santa Isabel in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, as the son of the Portuguese diplomat, politician and writer Marcelo Mathias and the Greek Fedora Charles Zaffiri, who had met during his father's diplomatic service in Athens. His older brother Leonardo Charles Zaffiri Duarte Mathias also became a diplomat.

After studying at Oxford University (1957 to 1959), he completed his law degree at Lisbon University . Later, like his father and older brother, he joined the Foreign Service of the Portuguese Foreign Ministry . There he worked in various positions, including secretary at the Portuguese embassy in Brasília (1973 to 1977) and at the Permanent Representation of Portugal to the EEC in Brussels (1977 to 1983). From 1983 to 1991 he worked in the Foreign Ministry, in particular as the Ministry's press spokesman . a. during the Iraq War 1990/1991. He then became Portuguese Consul General in New York (1991 to 1933).

He then became ambassador himself , representing Portugal in India from 1993 to 1997, with multiple accreditations for Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. From 1997 to 2000 he was Portugal's ambassador to Argentina .

In 2001 he became the permanent representative of Portugal to UNESCO until 2003. He then went into diplomatic retirement.

At the same time, he developed literary activity from the start. Since then he has been writing fiction, and his memories in the form of chronicles under the title No Devagar Depressa dos Tempos ( Portuguese for: "In the fast-moving slowness of times") have attracted particular attention.

Mathias is married to Anne-Marie Vaultier, the couple live in the Cascais district and have two sons, Nuno and Marcelo, both of whom are also diplomats.
