Leonardo Charles Zaffiri Duarte Mathias (born February 10, 1936 in Lisbon ; † April 22, 2020 ) was a diplomat from Portugal .

Life

Mathias was born in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, as the son of the Portuguese diplomat, politician and writer Marcelo Mathias and the Greek Fedora Charles Zaffiri, who met during his father's diplomatic service in Athens. His younger brother Marcello de Zaffiri Duarte Mathias also became a diplomat. Mathias studied history and philosophy at the University of Lisbon .

After joining the Foreign Service of the Portuguese Foreign Ministry , Mathias worked in various positions until he became ambassador for the first time in 1976 at the newly opened Portuguese embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad . In 1979 he moved to the Permanent Mission of Portugal to the UN , until he became State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry of his country in 1981 (until 1982).

In 1982 he was appointed Portuguese Ambassador to the United States . He stayed there until 1986. After his country joined the European Economic Community (now the EU ) in 1986, he became the permanent representative of Portugal there .

From 1989 he represented Portuguese interests as Portuguese ambassador to Brazil , and from 1993 he became Portuguese ambassador to Spain until 1999. He was then appointed as Portuguese representative in France , where he remained until 2001.

In 2001 he became the representative of the Mission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal for East Timor issues.

Awards

In addition to these awards in Portugal, Mathias received a number of orders abroad, including the Spanish Order de Isabel la Católica (on August 17, 1998), the Brazilian Order of the Southern Cross , the New Year's Order of the Vatican, the French Order of the Legion of Honor , the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Order of the Crown of Thailand , along with other, mostly European and Brazilian orders.
