Marco Schuler

Life

Marco Schuler first studied philosophy at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg in 1993 . In the following year he moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich to study sculpture. In 1995, the group project Munich is by the sea took place in Müllerstrasse in Munich , in which he was involved. In 1996 he was awarded a prize in the small sculpture competition organized by the Mainz broadcaster ZDF . In 1998 he became a master student of the object artist Olaf Metzel and in 1999 he received a scholarship at the Villa Arson in Nice . A project grant from the Steiner Foundation , Munich, followed in 2000. After receiving his diploma in 2001, his first solo exhibitions took place in 2002. Another project grant, made possible by the DAAD , took him to Los Angeles in 2002 . In 2003 he was also supported by grants and studio grants. In 2004 he received the Bavarian Art Prize for Fine Arts and in 2007 a travel grant from the state of Bavaria for another stay in Los Angeles. In between he was awarded the city of Bühl's art prize for sculpture and small sculptures (2005). In 2009 he worked as Artist in Residence in Krems an der Donau . Another prize he received was the Upper Rhine Media Art Prize, which was announced for the third time in 2009 by the Freiburg media art association artforum3.

At the end of 2011, Schuler created his work of art for public spaces called Orbi , which covered the summit cross of the Belchen until August 31, 2012. The square column, into which two “eyes” are cut on each side, is made up of 30 benches that were used during the Pope's visit to Freiburg in September 2011 . After a stopover in Görwihl , the sculpture found a new installation site on the east side of the Schlossberg in Staufen , where it was loaned to the public on September 28, 2019. Marco Schuler: “Like an inaccessible sentry box, the sculpture will rise up in front of the pedestrian on the way to the castle. Viewed from above, the angular giant will look like a friendly childlike box that looks out in all four directions. So: keep your eyes open in all four directions, stay open and free upwards, have your point of view, direct your gaze to beautiful and good and keep the secret that you are yourself! "

Marco Schuler - Orbi

Marco Schuler sometimes lives and works in Freiburg, but mainly in Markgräflerland .

Style descriptions

“The boundaries of pain and embarrassment, reflection and absurdity converged in Schuler's work with considerable aesthetic added value when the artist dresses completely in a wind tunnel - wind speed 110 km / h - (“ Schuler is getting dressed ”, 2000) or for so long digs into the ground until it disappears from the picture - «Schuler digs», 2000. Under the surface of simple experimental arrangements, in which little matchstick men on moving stages become placeholders of archaic rituals or one's own body mutates into an instrument of knowledge, Schuler unfolds a diverse range aesthetic vocabulary between body and society, between intimacy and emptying. "

- Martin Engler : Art Bulletin, 2002, Zurich

"The work of the artist Marco Schuler [...] is of a special, even daring mysticism. To explore boundaries, the artist lives up to his reputation in the creative range that is also said to him [again and again ...]."

- Susanne Müller : Badische Zeitung, 2009, Freiburg im Breisgau

“At the center of Marco Schuler's art is the relationship between the human body and space. His sculptures are characterized by a strong physical presence and directness. [He…] uses simple materials such as cardboard, wooden slats, styrofoam, canvas, rubber as the starting material for his objects and also works with concise colors. Some of his sculptures are reminiscent of Russian constructivism of the early 20th century in terms of form and color . In addition, a tension between the search for the supernatural and a direct physical-spatial experience becomes tangible in them. "

- Christine Heidemann : art historian, 2015, Berlin

“In his performative videos, the focus is on the artist himself and his immediate physicality. In the performative videos, which Marco Schuler never stages for a live performance but only as a video, he usually performs an activity that is totally unnecessary with great physical exertion. These videos are profound and full of humor. "
