Marcos Ana (2009)

Marcos Ana , pseudonym of Fernando Macarro Castillo , (born January 20, 1920 in Alconada ; died November 24, 2016 in Madrid ) was a Spanish writer .

Life

Macarro's parents moved from a village near Salamanca to Alcalá de Henares near Madrid. There he joined the youth organization of the Spanish Communist Party and fought on the side of the Republicans against the Franco putschists in the Spanish Civil War . At the end of the conflict he was sent to prison for the first time. He was sentenced to death twice. He was imprisoned for almost 23 years from 1939. He was released in 1962 by an Amnesty International campaign and went into exile in France, where he founded the Centro de Información y Solidaridad con España (CISE), chaired by Pablo Picasso . In 1976, a year after Franco's death, he was able to return to Spain.

Macarro began writing while in custody, and his poems were smuggled out of Burgos prison . Under the pseudonym Marcos Ana, formed from the first names of his parents, he wrote several books in which he dealt with his imprisonment. In 2007 he published his autobiography “Tell me how a tree is”, for which Pedro Almodóvar secured the film rights, but did not realize the film in the following years.

From 2004 to 2016 he was on the Honorary Board of the Fédération Internationale des Résistants (FIR) .
