Marcus Bai (born October 11, 1972 in Ulamona , Madang Province ) is a former Papua New Guinean rugby league player. He began his career with the Hull Sharks and the Gold Coast Chargers before moving to the Melbourne Storm , winning the NRL and the World Club Challenge with them . He then played in the Super League for the Leeds Rhinos and the Bradford Bulls , with Leeds he won the Super League and the World Club Challenge and with Bradford also the World Club Challenge. He is the first player to win three World Club Challenges with three different clubs.

Career

Bai began his career with the Port Moresby Vipers before moving to the English club Hull Sharks in 1997 , which was then playing in the second division. For this he completed eight games before moving to the Gold Coast Chargers . Although he only played for a year with the Chargers, he made five attempts in 18 games to attract attention and was signed by the newly formed Melbourne Storm .

Melbourne Storm

In his first season with the Storm he was named Winger of the Year. In his sophomore season he played in all games and won the 1999 NRL Grand Final against the St. George Illawarra Dragons . The subsequent World Club Challenge against the Super League champions St Helens won the Storm 44: 6, where he put a try. After the end of the 2000 season he took part in the Rugby League World Cup with Papua New Guinea .

Leeds Rhinos

After the end of the 2003 season, Bai moved to the Super League for the Leeds Rhinos . His debut was during a boxing day friendly against the Castleford Tigers , in which he made a try. In his first Super League game against the London Broncos , he put on a hat trick at the sold-out Headingley Carnegie Stadium . In the semifinals against the Wigan Warriors , he put a hat trick again and won the subsequent Super League Grand Final against the Bradford Bulls . He became one of the few players to win a title in both the NRL and the Super League.

In 2005 he won the World Club Challenge with Leeds against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and made it to the finals of the Super League and the Challenge Cup with them . Both games were lost, the first against the Bradford Bulls and the second against Hull FC .

Bradford Bulls

For the 2006 season, Bai was signed by the Bradford Bulls . His first game was the 2006 World Club Challenge against the Wests Tigers , which Bradford won 30:10 and in which he put two attempts. After his first season ended, he received the Bulls' Back of the Year Award and signed an additional year contract. But there was no further year with the Bulls, as he announced his retirement in December.
