Marek Bobéth

Marek Bobéth (born December 28, 1935 in Riga , Latvia ; † January 31, 2012 in Berlin-Spandau ) was a German choir conductor , concert pianist , musicologist and university teacher .

Life and education

Marek Bobéth was born a Baltic German in the Latvian capital Riga. In January 1945 he came to Naumburg (Saale) via Posen , where he was trained as a pianist by Anny Schäfer. She had been taught by Carl Friedberg (student of Clara Schumann ) and Otto Neitzel (student of Franz Liszt ). After graduating from high school, he studied with Dieter Zechlin in Berlin and attended master classes with Gerhard Puchelt and Hélène Boschi . He supplemented his education by studying conducting , musicology with Rudolf Stephan and theater studies . He studied choral conducting in Berlin from 1956 to 1959 with Fritz Höft.

Act

He wrote his doctoral thesis on Borodin's opera Prince Igor . His book on the East Prussian composer Hermann Goetz became a standard work . His work on the Baltic German pianist and composer Eduard Erdmann was published in Riga . In general, the focus of his research was on Eastern European topics. Bobéth has taught in Germany, Russia, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and has given concerts in many European countries and overseas. He designed radio, television and record recordings. From 1971 to 1989 he headed the Berliner Liedertafel 1884 eV, with which he realized numerous world premieres and a major tour of Japan, and since 1973 he has conducted the Wedding Chamber Choir and, since 1977, the Berliner Chorfreunde, with whom he undertook concert tours to China. He conceived and directed major events, including the "Singenden Kudamm" in 1976, for the 750th anniversary of Berlin, the 100th anniversary of the Berlin Singers' Association and the choir festivals of the German Choir Association in Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin and Bremen and the concert in the Berliner Waldbühne on June 21, 2003. The International Hans von Bülow Society elected him chairman and he was appointed president of the 2012 “Hans von Bülow” international piano competition in cooperation with the Meiningen court orchestra. He is a founding member of the Tchaikovsky Society and a member of its scientific advisory board. As a board member of the Tonkünstlerverband, he was responsible for the national singing competition in Berlin for many years . He was chairman of the artistic advisory board of the concert series "Klassik in Spandau". Marek Bobéth was a member of the presidium of the Berlin Choir Association from 1983 to 2009 and chaired its music committee. He was also a member of the music committee of the German Choir Association from 1986 to 2009.

Honors

The Federal President awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in recognition of his artistic, educational and scientific work . He was appointed music director (FDB), choir director (ADC) and professor and was awarded the Schubert Medal of the City of Vienna and the Japanese order “Chokko-mon-kyo”. In 2011 he received the Geschwister-Mendelssohn-Medal of the Berlin Choir Association for outstanding services to Berlin choir life.
