Life

John Percival Postgate, her father

Before the First World War

Margaret Cole was born on May 6, 1893, to John Percival Postgate, a professor at Trinity College and later professor at the University of Liverpool , and Edith Postgate (née Allen) in Cambridge. She was the eldest of two daughters and 4 sons.

She was taught at the Roedean School and later studied Classical Studies at Girton College . During her studies she read books by authors such as HG Wells and George Bernard Shaw , which led to her becoming socialist. After graduating in 1914 (women were banned from formal degrees in Cambridge until 1947), she taught Classical Studies at St Paul's Girls' School for two years.

First World War and the interwar period

During the First World War , in addition to a campaign against conscription , she helped her brother Raymond Postgate achieve conscientious objection status. However, Raymond was only granted the status of a non-combatant serving in the army, which he refused. He was then arrested. During this time she wrote the poem The Falling Leaves , which was published in 1918 along with poems such as Afterwards and Præmaturi in Margaret Postgate's Poems collection .

At the same time she joined the Fabian Society, where she worked in the Fabian Research Department. It was there that she met George Douglas Howard Cole in 1916 , whom she married two years later. They worked together in the Fabian Society until they moved to Oxford in 1924 , where they worked in the Labor Research Department. Cole soon became a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian and a reader at University College Oxford . She also became a friend of Beatrice Webb .

In 1931 she and her husband founded the Society for Socialist Inquiry and Propaganda , which was later renamed the Socialist League . A year later, she and her husband also founded the New Fabian Research Bureau .

Later life and death

In 1941, after an appointment by Herbert Stanley Morrisons, she was accepted into the Education Committee of London County Council , where she was an advocate of the integrated comprehensive school . From 1952 she was also Alderman of the London County Council. She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1965 and a Lady of the Order of the British Empire 5 years later .

She died on May 7, 1980 in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
