Margarete von Anhalt (born November 12, 1494 in Koethen , † October 7, 1521 in Weimar ) from the Ascanians , was a princess of Anhalt and by marriage Duchess of Saxony .

Life

Margarete was a daughter of Prince Waldemar VI. from his marriage to Margarete (1464–1539), daughter of Count Günther XXXVI. from Schwarzburg-Blankenburg .

On November 13, 1513, she became the second wife of the future Elector Johann the Constant of Saxony (1468-1532) in Torgau . Johann's brother Friedrich the Wise was dissatisfied with his brother's marriage to Margarete, who came from a relatively insignificant house. The marriage was the reason that the brothers gave up their common household and divided the country. Margarete's brother Wolfgang became the second German imperial prince after the elector of Saxony, who professed Lutheran doctrine , through these family ties . In 1514 the poet Philipp Engelbrecht dedicated an epithalamium to Margarete and Johann .

Johann was devoted to his wife in conjugal love and loyalty. Margarete died in her residence in Weimar four years before her husband became Elector of Saxony. She is buried in the local church of St. Peter and Paul .

progeny

Margarete had the following children from their marriage:

⚭ 1536 Duke Philip I of Pomerania (1515–1560)
  • Margaret (1518–1535)
  • Johann II. (* / † 1519)
  • Johann Ernst (1521–1553), Duke of Saxe-Coburg
⚭ 1542 Princess Katharina von Braunschweig-Grubenhagen (1524–1581)
