Margarethe von Münsterberg (born August 25, 1473 in Breslau ; † June 28, 1530 in Dessau ) was by birth Duchess of Münsterberg and Countess of Glatz and by marriage to Prince Ernst of Anhalt (1474-1516) Princess of Anhalt . After the death of her husband, she ruled the principality under guardianship for her underage sons.

Life

Margarethe, who was a granddaughter of the Bohemian King George of Podebrady , came from the Munsterberg branch of the noble family Podebrady . She was born as the fourth child of Duke Heinrich the Elder of Münsterberg (1448–1498) and his wife Ursula von Brandenburg (1450–1508) in Breslau. Raised by her parents in strict faith, she married Prince Ernst von Anhalt from the Anhalt-Zerbst line in 1494. Ernst was able to unite the Principality of Anhalt under his reign for the first time since 1252 after some branch lines died out. Both took up residence in Dessau.

In 1516 Margarethe took over the reign of the Principality of Anhalt-Dessau for her underage sons Johann , Georg and Joachim . Above all, thrift and deep religiosity characterized her reign. Margarethe strictly rejected the Reformation that spread from neighboring Wittenberg from 1517 onwards. She found allies among others with the Archbishop of Magdeburg , Albrecht , her first cousin. In 1525 Margarethe tried to take action against the Reformation with an alliance of Catholic princes she had initiated . Although her eldest son Johann, who entered the reign as Johann IV. From 1522, and her son Georg (later as Georg III. Joint regent) had already established contact with Martin Luther , their sons only dared after Margaret's death, also for Anhalt-Dessau (with George III as the driving force) to introduce the Reformation from 1534.

Margarethe von Münsterberg succeeded in bringing some of the lands east of Wörlitz that had been pledged to the neighboring Electoral Saxony back to Anhalt. Therefore the Vorwerk Münsterberg in today's municipality of Griesen is named after her.
