The first mention of a parish or church in Laubenheim can be found in a document from the Eberbach monastery from 1211. The St. Viktor monastery in front of Mainz, southeast of Mainz near Weisenau , was entitled to the big tithe and the right of patronage to the church at this time . It is believed that the Marian patronage of the church was borrowed from that of the Weisenau Church of the Assumption of Mary. An independent parish has existed since 1358. On the Mascop 's plan of the Laubenheim with Weisenau district from 1577, the church is shown in the center of the wayside cross.

The current church building dates back to 1717. Pastor Franz Friedrich Velten had the nave expanded as a three-aisled baroque hall by 1720. The main nave and the south facade are the oldest parts of the building. The original choir remained unaffected by the renovation, but was demolished in 1907. The church was consecrated on Sunday, July 7th, 1720 and the consecration day was set for the Sunday after the Visitation of the Virgin Mary . This enabled the parish to finally separate from the Weisenau community. In the years 1907/1908, the cubature of the Laubenheim church changed due to the addition of side aisles planned by Ludwig Becker and the enlargement of the choir. The consecration of the extended church took place on June 14, 1908 by Bishop Georg Heinrich Maria Kirstein . In the course of the air raids on Mainz , the church was badly damaged on February 1, 1945, but not destroyed.

description

The hall church, which is essentially baroque, is 39 m long and 21 m wide at the largest points. The vault in the main nave is 11.5 m high, the tower 28 m high. The church offers around 400 seats.

Furnishing

The altars of the church come from the former Jesuit novitiate in Mainz . The Mayor of Mainz, Edmund Gedult von Jungsfeld , gave the three altars to the Laubenheim pastor Henrich.
