The church is located in the eastern part of the village of Illerbeuren, slightly elevated on a high plateau above the Iller .

Assumption Tower

history

The oldest part of the church, the basement tower made of roughly hewn tuff stone , was probably built in the 14th century. The upper part of the tower made of smoothly hewn stone is probably more recent. The probably oldest bell in Swabia hangs in the belfry. It bears the year 1095 and is consecrated to the four evangelists. The choir and the sacristy were probably built in the second half of the 15th century. The baroque remodeling began in 1722. From 1722 to 1729 the church was raised and enlarged with an extension 18 feet to the west. The church was renovated in 1854, before the neo-Gothic remodeling began between 1907 and 1908 . In this fins in unison vault retracted. Another restoration was carried out in 1935. The last time the facade was renewed was 1978 to 1979.

Building description

Nave towards the choir

The east-facing church has a retracted choir on two axes with a 5/8 end . The net rib vault is neo-Gothic and was only drawn in from 1907 to 1908 based on the model of the vault in the sacristy. Ogival windows are let into the choir. Outside the choir has simple buttresses with a water hammer . The passage to the hall-like nave consists of a round choir arch.

The nave has four window axes and is structured by wide templates. The ceiling is designed as a flat barrel vault with stitch caps. The large windows have arches. On the west wall there is a two-story gallery, the upper one serves as an organ gallery.

At the northern corner of the choir is the late Gothic, undivided tower made of tufa, closed with a gable roof . The ground floor has a ribbed vault with a disc keystone. The vault is broken through by the staircase to the mansion. On the upper floor there are coupled sound arcades in which the intermediate supports have been replaced by iron bars. The tower beam bears the inscription M. Nicolaus, ANNO - 1763 Egensberger. In the sign on the west facade there are remains of frescoes that were uncovered during the last renovation.

The sacristy on the north side between the tower and the choir is equipped on the ground floor with a ribbed vault on pyramid consoles with two yokes. The manor's box on the upper floor opens up like a basket arch towards the choir. This basket opening probably dates from the 18th century.

Outside on the western wall: memorial plaque for the parish priest, Bernhard Heinzmann, who was murdered by the Nazis in 1942.

Furnishing

In the church there are items of equipment from the late Gothic, Baroque and Neo-Gothic periods.

Ceiling fresco of the main nave

Frescoes

The frescoes in the church were painted by Franz Xaver Stähle in 1783. The choir ceiling fresco under the neo-Gothic ribbed vault depicts the Assumption of the Virgin with angels and the four evangelists; it was damaged when the ribs were attached. The ceiling fresco of the nave shows the Annunciation scene and the birth of Mary. The representation in the temple can be seen in the main fields. The spandrels bear frescoes with Mary from Mount Carmel , St. Simon Stock, a Rosary Madonna, the four Church Fathers, David and motifs from the New and Old Covenants. The cleaning of the temple by Jesus is depicted on the lower gallery.

Piece

The stucco in the church is sparse for the high baroque period and consists only of acanthus tendrils and shells on the spandrels of the nave and two angel heads on the gallery, created by an unknown artist. Around 1729 the coat of arms of the Lords of Westernach was placed above the choir arch .

pulpit

Pulpit

The wooden pulpit in the eastern third of the south wall of the nave from the late 18th century is decorated with marble. It has been extensively renovated, so that little of the original pulpit has been preserved. The parapet of the basket is curved, on the sound cover there is a figure of the Archangel Michael.

Baptismal font

The baptismal font , created between 1780 and 1790, is made of marbled wood and has the shape of an urn. The lid is crowned with a group of figures depicting the baptism of Jesus.

Sideboard

The production of the sideboard in the choir room from marbled wood is scheduled between 1780 and 1790. The table is decorated with a gilded laurel wreath.

Lay chairs

The lay chairs probably date from the second decade of the 18th century. The cheeks are made of oak with strong foliage carvings, the benches and backrests are kept simple.

Wooden figures

St. Dominic in the choir

There are a total of six wooden figures in the church. A large wooden crucifix from the mid-18th century hangs in the choir arch. On the neo-Gothic high altar from 1854 is a baroque Madonna figure from the second half of the 18th century. Together with the crucifix and the statue of St. John, also from the second half of the 18th century, it probably formed a crucifixion scene. There is also a statue of St. Nicholas and an unspecified saint in the high altar. These two figures date from the third quarter of the 15th century. The artist is unknown. A statue presumably depicting St. Anthony the Eremita was created in the early 18th century.

Epitaphs

The epitaph of Maria Anna Catharina Freiin zu Westernach made of colored sandstone is attached to the southern choir wall . In addition to a relief of the deceased and the date of death 1701, it shows the von Westernach couple in front of a crucifix. Outside there is a heavily weathered sandstone epitaph that is dated to the end of the 18th century. Three sandstone obelisks on tuff stone plinths date from the same period . A tomb in the form of a Roman gravestone in the outside area dates from the end of the 18th century.

Oil paintings

In the church there is a painting of St. Francis from the 18th century. Theodor Baierl painted the other oil paintings below the gallery in 1908. They show St. Therese von Avila and Franz von Borja.

High altar

Retable of the neo-Gothic high altar

The neo-Gothic high altar in the form of a winged altar and the neo-Gothic choir stalls were created by an unknown artist in 1854. Theodor Baierl also painted the side panels in 1908.

use

The church is the parish church of the main political community of Kronburg. Church services are held here regularly. Because of the nearby Swabian Farm Museum, it is often visited by tourists and used by the museum as an exemplary example of a typical Upper Swabian village church.
