This Roman Catholic listed Maria-Hilf-Chapel is located on Mühleplatz in the Gatschief part of the village in Innerbraz in the Bludenz district in Vorarlberg . It is consecrated to the Mother of God and belongs to the parish church of Braz and thus to the dean's office Bludenz-Sonnenberg in the diocese of Feldkirch .

The structure ( 710  m above sea level ) was built around 1630 and is about 1,600 meters as the crow flies from the village center of Innerbraz. The chapel was first mentioned in 1743 as the Maria-Hilf-Kapelle.

Church building

The chapel was originally dedicated to St. Valentine and is located on Mühleplatz. It has a rectangular basic shape with an open wooden vestibule in northwest / southeast orientation with a gable roof . To the southeast are the bell ridge and the altar . The bell ridge is formed from two connected wooden crosses, the bell can only be operated manually on a rope in the area of the altar. In a similar construction, the listed, 1634 built path chapel St. Magnus executed in Innerbraz.

Access to the chapel is made impossible by an iron grille. The exposed interior of the room takes place exclusively through the iron grille.

On the masonry, desk-shaped altar is a statue of the Blessed Mother with the baby Jesus in her arms and the inscription on the base: St. Mary . To the left of the statue of the Blessed Mother is a statue of St. Valentin of Raetia, on the right a statue of St. Joseph represents. The altar figures in the interior date from the late 17th century.

On the left side wall there are two pictures depicting the Mother of God and Jesus.

Way of St. James

A section of the Jakobsweg Landeck – Einsiedeln , which leads through Vorarlberg, the Klostertal and the Walgau , runs via Innerbraz - Ausserbraz - Oberradin - St. Leonhard to Bludenz . There is a stamp for the pilgrimage card in the chapel.

Location and traffic

Innerbraz is now off the main traffic routes. The main street, the Arlbergstraße, leads across Innerbraz past the parish church of Braz, the Magnus chapel and the Maria-Hilf chapel. For many centuries this road was the main connection route through the Klostertal between the Arlberg Pass and Bludenz (further into the Walgau and Rhine Valley). The Alfenz flows about 30 m below the chapel and 65 m below it is the Arlberg expressway S16 (E60).

The Hintergasse stop ( 824  m above sea level ) of the Arlbergbahn, which is no longer served by train traffic, is about 750 meters as the crow flies.

The Haid House is diagonally across from the chapel. It is one of the oldest buildings in Innerbraz and the only one that has been researched in terms of architectural history. It probably dates from the 14th century. The Hais house, together with the chapel, formed the village center of the "Mühleplatz" parcel and served as a residential building, tavern and shop. There is still the inscription: "Albergo", which reminds of the Trentino residents who were housed here during the construction of the railway.
