Maria - Only the Night Was Witness is a German-Italian film drama from 1976 by Ernst Hofbauer .

Panos, a Greek taxi driver with roots in Naples (Italy), and his wife Maria, a waitress from Germany, emigrated to Mykonos together to make a living there. Maria, who works in a bar, is attacked one night when she wants to lock the pint, and is brutally raped by a rocker gang led by the unscrupulous drug dealer Bernd - first by Bernd, then by a drug addict named Stavros, who, in order to drive him out of "being gay", is forced by Bernd & Co. to have sex with Maria. When Panos comes to pick up his wife, she cannot open the door for him or call for help because the gangsters in the restaurant hold her tight and hold her mouth and a knife is on her throat. Panos therefore assumes that his wife is hanging around and moves away first. Then Maria is picked up by the police that night, completely disturbed.
After giving evidence to the police, Maria returns to Panos late at night, but Panos first beats her because he believes his wife is hanging around. Then he, completely deluded macho, simply puts Maria in front of the door. Maria's alleged behavior, her assumed "cheating", has deeply hurt him in his "southern honor". Then Maria moves out of the apartment and looks for shelter with a friend. When Panos learns of the real events from the police, he seeks revenge and wants to stop Bernd and his rocker gang at his meeting point. A fight ensues in which Panos loses the disadvantage of being overwhelmed and then, severely damaged, has to stay in the hospital bed for three days. Nevertheless, one can now attack Bernd and Stavros, because now the two main culprits are known. The two rapists are arrested and brought to justice. But the process turns around, because Bernd, who comes from a wealthy family, has a good defense attorney at his side, who unsettles Maria with his questions and breaks the rocker leader free. Meanwhile, Maria has to find out that she - she assumes: from the rapist - is pregnant. She is devastated. Panos, beside himself with hatred, is now taking bloody revenge on the perpetrators ...

Maria - Nur die Nacht was a witness , occasionally also called Maria - Nur die Nacht was her witness , was filmed in 1976 and was premiered on February 23, 1980 in Italy. It is currently not known when exactly the film was presented in Germany.
August Rieger wrote the script under a pseudonym.
