Maria Elisabeth of Austria (born February 5, 1737 in Vienna , † June 7, 1740 at Laxenburg Palace ) was Maria Theresa's first child , but died as a child.
Life
Maria Elisabeth Amalia Antonia Josepha Gabriela Johanna Agatha was the first child of Archduchess Maria Theresa, daughter of the Habsburg Emperor Charles VI., And Franz Stephan of Lorraine . However, there was no great jubilation at the birth of the child, as the parents had wanted a son.
Maria Elisabeth was a lively and lively girl, whom the grandfather of Emperor Charles VI. had his joy. He liked to play with his "Liesl", who was very "entertaining and funny". During a family stay in Laxenburg , Maria Elisabeth broke out on June 7, 1740, an illness that is still unknown today, which manifested itself in constant violent vomiting. Stomach cramps alternated with repeated vomiting throughout the day until the girl died that same evening around nine o'clock at the age of three. Her father Franz Stephan reported on the death of his daughter:
“At eight o'clock I was called and handed me a note from the doctor, from which I took: It is time for you to come to take your wife away, because the child will not live long. So I went a little confused and found my wife in tears when I arrived. I took her by the hand and led her into her rooms. Then I went back to the sick person. I had only stayed half a quarter of an hour when the child sat up, looked at me firmly and said in a raised clear voice: "I command myself, oh my God!" Then she fell back and died in my arms. "
The princess was buried as the first member of the House of Habsburg or Habsburg-Lothringen in the Maria-Theresien-Crypt , part of the Capuchin Crypt. Her heart and her entrails, which were removed as part of the corpse preservation , are in the ducal crypt .
The name Maria Elisabeth was also given to her younger sister Maria Elisabeth .
