Maria Lauber (born August 25, 1891 in Prasten near Frutigen ; † July 4, 1973 there ) was a Swiss writer who wrote partly in High German and partly in the Frutigtal dialect ( Bernese Oberlandisch ).

Life

Maria Lauber, daughter of Johannes Lauber and Rosina Susanna Grossen, grew up on a simple farm, but was then the only one of the children to attend the Monbijou teacher training college in Bern . From 1910 to 1924 she was a primary school teacher in Adelboden , in Neuligen near Eriswil and in Oberried near Lenk and from 1924 to 1952 at the lower school in Kien near Reichenbach in Kandertal . In 1952 she was given early retirement for health reasons. Her grave is in a place of honor in the Frutiger cemetery.

Lauber wrote predominantly in the Frutigtal dialect of the Bernese Oberland . Her early works were of local history, later she wrote novels, stories and poems.

Her two-volume novel Chüngold (1950 and 1954; the first part annotated again in 2018) is not explicitly an autobiography, but the protagonist can be identified with the young Maria Lauber: the first volume is about «Chüngi's» childhood before she was born until she leaves the family and the village for the first time, the second of the young mountain farmer's child who has to find their way around the city. It is the first Swiss dialect novel to tell from a female perspective.
