Maria Rita Saulle (born December 3, 1935 in Caserta ; † July 7, 2011 in Rome ) was an Italian law scholar and university professor who was most recently a judge at the Italian Constitutional Court ( Corte costituzionale ).

Life

After attending school, Rita Maria Saulle studied law at the La Sapienza University in Rome and, after completing her studies, dealt in particular with international law .

In 1981 she accepted a professorship in international law at the Faculty of Maritime Law at the University of Naples Federico II , before teaching European law at the Scuola Superiore della Pubblica Amministrazione (SSPA), the Italian administrative college, between 1983 and 1986 .

After she was again Professor of International Law at the University of Naples Federico II between 1989 and 1990, she accepted a professorship for International Law and International Law at the University of La Sapienza in 1992, where she taught until her retirement in 2007.

As a recognized specialist in the field of international law, she also took part in international conferences several times and was an advisor to various organizations and institutions. In 1989 she represented Italy at the UN conference which drafted the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child , passed on November 20, 1989 by the General Assembly of the United Nations . In 1993 she was a member of the Italian delegation to a UN conference on human rights in Vienna , before becoming president of an independent international commission on the return of refugees to Yugoslavia based on the Dayton Agreement in 1996 .

On November 9, 2005, Rita Maria Saulle was appointed as the second woman after Fernanda Contri to be a judge at the Italian Constitutional Court and held this office until her death.
