Maria Rosary Queen (Quettingen)
The Church of St. Maria Rosenkranzkönigin is a Catholic church in the Quettingen district of Leverkusen , Quettinger Straße 109-111. Until 2010 it was the seat of the parish of the same name.
history
The initiative to build a church came from Quettinger citizens in 1903, who founded a church building association. In 1909 the church council of Lützenkirchen decided to build a church in Quettingen. In 1914 the Archdiocese of Cologne approved a collection in all the parishes of the Archdiocese for the construction of the church in Quettingen, a “village in which almost without exception factory workers and small business people lived” and which “today counts over 1000 Catholics who are mixed with other believers”. The foundation stone was laid on September 7, 1913. The designs for the building with neo-Romanesque style elements come from the community member August Hohmann. As a subsidiary church of St. Maurinus Lützenkirchen , it was designated on May 24, 1914 by Pastor Adam Wirtz from Lützenkirchen to the title of St. Maria Rosary Queen. At first it was shorter than it is today and only had a roof turret. The church was consecrated on October 5, 1947 by the Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Wilhelm Stockums .
Until 1920 Pastor Adam Wirtz and Vicar Eduard Conrad carried out the service in Quettingen from Lützenkirchen. Clemens Stinner became the first rector in Quettingen in 1920. In 1925 the rectory was built next to the church; in the same year “St. Maria Rosenkranzkönigin Quettingen ”was raised to an independent chapel parish and in 1930 to the rectorate parish with its own pastor, on September 15, 1963 it became a canonical parish . The church got a steeple and three bells in 1937. In 1942 the organ followed with 17 stops on two manuals and a pedal , built by the Bonn organ building company Johannes Klais Orgelbau (Opus 913). In 1956/57 the chancel was redesigned, in 1969 a fundamental renovation took place with redesign of the interior according to the specifications of the 2nd Vatican Council , the tower and the forecourt.
On January 1, 2011, the merger with the parish of St. Maurinus Lützenkirchen took place to form the new parish of St. Maurinus and Marien , after a joint parish association had existed since 2003 and the "Lützenkirchen / Quettingen parish community" had existed since 2005 . The two churches in the new parish keep their previous names “St. Maria Rosary Queen " and " St. Maurinus ” . The parish church is St. Maurinus.
After a smoldering fire on December 5, 2012 in the area of the sacrificial candle holder in the side chapel, the entire interior was very sooty. The church underwent a thorough cleaning and had to remain closed until April 15, 2013. At the same time, planned renovation measures were brought forward. In the course of 2013/2014 the organ was thoroughly overhauled, on September 7, 2013 a new stone altar with a matching ambo was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Manfred Melzer .
