Maria do Rosário Nunes (born November 22, 1966 in Veranópolis , State of Rio Grande do Sul ) is a Brazilian politician and member of the Chamber of Deputies . She is a member of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT, Workers' Party) and is known for her work as a human rights defender .

Life

Maria do Rosário, daughter of Agilio Nunes and Hilda Fiorentin Nunes, studied pedagogy from 1987 to 1993 at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Porto Alegre . In 1999 she specialized in domestic violence at the University of São Paulo (USP). In 2009 she received her master's degree in educational science from the UFRGS with a thesis Pedofilização e Mercado. She is currently studying for her Ph. D in Political Science in UFRGS.

Political career

She began her career in the Partido Comunista do Brasil (Communist Party of Brazil), for which she was elected city councilor of the state capital Porto Alegre with 7555 votes in the local elections in Brazil in 1992 . She joined the PT the following year and was re-elected in 1996, this time with more than 20,000 votes. From February 1, 1999 to February 1, 2003, she was represented as a state parliamentarian with 77,000 votes in the legislative assembly of Rio Grande do Sul . In the following elections in Brazil in 2002 , she ran as a member of the federal government. Since February 1, 2003, she has represented her home state Rio Grande do Sul in the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, meanwhile from the 52nd to 56th legislative period, where she last achieved 1.66% or 97,303 of the valid votes in the 2018 elections in Brazil .

From January 1, 2011 to April 2, 2014, Dilma Rousseff appointed her State Secretary in the rank of minister for human rights (Portuguese: Ministra Chefe da Secretaria dos Direitos Humanos ) in her first cabinet .

As a State MP, she was Chair of the Citizenship and Human Rights Committee and Vice-Chair of the Legislative Assembly for two years.

Controversy

In 2003, Rosário was insulted in the Chamber of Deputies by the then MP and current President Jair Bolsonaro , after she had previously called him a rapist, with the words:

"Jamais estupraria você porque você nicht merece."
"I would never rape you because you didn't deserve it."

Rosário was accused by one of the former directors of the Odebrecht Group , Alexandrino de Salles Ramos de Alencar, as part of the investigation into the corruption scandal Operation Lava Jato, of accepting illegal campaign aid amounting to R $ 150,000 for the 2010 election campaign, which she denied.
