Marian Opala

Marian Peter Opala (born January 20, 1921 in Łódź , Poland , † October 11, 2010 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma ) was an American judge of Polish descent.

Life

During the Second World War he served in the Polish army and was later interned in the Flossenbürg concentration camp for some time . He later emigrated to the United States. There he completed a law degree at Oklahoma City University , from which he graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). In 1953 he was granted US citizenship . Subsequent further studies in economics at Oklahoma City University, he finished in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science (BS Economics).

He then began his professional career as an assistant district attorney (Assistant County Attorney) of Oklahoma County , which was followed by an activity as an arbitrator at the Oklahoma Supreme Court between 1960 and 1965 . He was then a prosecutor on the staff of Judge Rooney McInerney from 1965 to 1969 and also completed a postgraduate study of law at the Law School of New York University , which he completed in 1968 with a Master of Laws (LL.M.).

In 1969 he became the administrative director of the Oklahoma judicial system and held that position until he was appointed judge on the Oklahoma State Industrial Court in 1977.

Marian Opala was appointed judge of the Oklahoma Supreme Court in 1978 and held that judge's office until his death. During this time he was also President of the Supreme Court (Chief Justice) between 1991 and 1992 .
