Mariano Pierbenedetti (* 1538 in Camerino , † January 21, 1611 in Rome ; also Marianus Perbenedictus ) was a cardinal and bishop of the Catholic Church .

Life

He was the son of Carlo Pierbenedetti and Catarina Dommelusi. His uncle Battista Mariano was a relative of Pope Paul III. He received his education at the Collegio Romano in Rome, which he completed in 1574 with a doctorate in philosophy and theology .

Pierbenedetti became Bishop of Martirano in 1577 . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Felice Peretti . On December 20, 1589 Pope appointed him Sixtus V. to Cardinal priests and awarded him on 15 January 1590 titular church of Santi Marcellino e Pietro . Cardinal Pierbenedetti took part both in the conclave in September 1590 , which Urban VII elected, and in the conclave in October 1590 , from which Gregory XIV emerged as pope. He was also among the participants in the conclaves of 1591 , 1592 , March 1605, and May 1605 . In 1607 he changed the titular church and took over Santa Maria in Trastevere . On May 28, 1608 he was raised to cardinal bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Frascati .

His tomb with a multi-colored marble slab is in the Roman basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore .
