Life

Marie-Caroline-Philomène Deluil-Martiny was the daughter of the respected lawyer Paul Deluil-Martiny and the great niece of the Servant of God Anne-Madeleine Rémusat . From 1863 she took the decisive steps for the great expansion of the honor guard of the Sacred Heart of Jesus ( French : Garde d´Honneur du Sacré Coeur) of the French sister Marie du Sacré-Cœur (Constance Bernard). In 1873 she founded the Congregation of the Daughters of the Heart of Jesus and the first monastery of the Congregation in Antwerp , where they had to flee because of the political situation in France. The hallmark of the new congregation was the veneration of the heart of Jesus and the sacrament of the altar . On February 2, 1876 approved Cardinal - Archbishop Victor-Augustin-Isidore Dechamps the first constitutions. On August 17, 1878, the sisters were entrusted with the newly built Sacred Heart Basilica in Antwerp-Berchem. There the first sisters of the congregation took their religious vows on August 22, 1878 . Marie de Jésus Deluil-Martiny was able to found several houses for her congregation in the following years. On Ash Wednesday in 1884, she was murdered by a French anarchist in the house of the Congregation in La Servianne.

On October 22nd, 1989 Pope John Paul II beatified Marie de Jésus. Her feast day in the liturgy is February 27th.
