Marie of Baden (1865–1939)
Marie, Princess of Baden (full name: Sopie Marie Luise Amelie Josephine ; * July 26, 1865 in Baden-Baden ; † November 29, 1939 there ) was a member of the House of Baden and from 1904 to 1918 the last Duchess of Anhalt .
Life
Princess Marie was the only daughter of Prince Wilhelm von Baden (1829–1897), the third son of Grand Duke Leopold von Baden , and Princess Maria von Leuchtenberg (1841–1914). Her only brother was Prince Max von Baden , the last Chancellor of the German Empire .
On July 2, 1889, Princess Marie married Hereditary Prince Friedrich von Anhalt (1856–1918) in Karlsruhe , who ascended the throne in 1904 as Duke Friedrich II . The marriage remained childless. Duke Friedrich died in 1918 and Marie survived him by twenty years. She died in 1939 in her native Baden-Baden at the age of 74.
She found her resting place at the side of her husband in the mausoleum in Dessau , the burial place of the Dukes of Anhalt. On June 4, 1958, she was reburied in a family grave in the nearby cemetery. A simple wooden cross with the inscription “ Herzogl. The von Anhalt family ”was, according to the will of the political rulers, the only thing that should remind of the House of Anhalt . Today there is a memorial stone for the ducal family at the Ziebigk cemetery , on which Marie's name can also be found.
legacy
The Melanchthon House in Bretten , which was inaugurated in 1903, received an extensive donation from Duchess Marie for the library: " This collection is highlighted by the magnificent" Anhaltinian "bindings ".
