Marielie's Riebesel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marielies Riebesel (born June 20, 1934 in Bombeck ; † March 5, 2015 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German textile artist, painter and graphic artist .

Live and act

Marielies Riebesel grew up in Bombeck near Salzwedel in the Altmark , from 1953 to 1959 she studied at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle (Saale) , today the University of Art and Design, Painting and Textile Design. After completing her studies, she worked as a designer in the Halle textile factory from 1961 to 1965. Since 1965 she has worked as a freelance visual artist.

She practiced the rare art of tapestry weaving . Her works on paper also show associations with tissue.

Quote from Rüdiger Giebler (2009):

"Interwoven thinking - in Marielies Riebesel's graphics the path goes from design to weaving and back again - the linear drawings underlaid with watercolors do not lose any of the ease of transferring them to the tapestry - and over the years the cardboard boxes become works of art in their own right."

In the design of the drawings and cardboard boxes, spaces are left for the depicted body landscapes; in the tapestry she implements these drawings in accordance with the textile requirements. She works in the tradition of tapestry design and goes a way into contemporary representations with each new work.

Quote from Rüdiger Giebler (2009):

“Marielies Riebesel loves gaps, so she creates space in the fabric of memory. She needs the spacing in order to give the small things undivided attention. Regardless of whether it is about communal history or biographical things, what seems large and important is spread out such as things washed up by chance, shells, wood, bones, shards on the beach. In this way the material of memory is preserved in the fabric, the essence of things is brought into line with that of the carpet. "

In 2006, Marielies Riebesel received an order to design a tapestry for the 1200th anniversary of Halle's city history.

In addition to the actual artistic work, her work also included restorations and theatrical equipment.

In her family there are other artists in the next generation, such as her daughter, the actress Bettina Riebesel and her husband, the actor Jörg Dathe and her niece, the glass artist Annegrete Riebesel .

She made several study trips, for example to Lausanne in 1979, to Central Asia in 1985, to Poland in 1994, to Italy in 1996, to Paris in 1998 and to Switzerland in 2006.
