The character was added to the international phonetic alphabet in 2005 and represents the voiced labiodental flap . According to the IPA, the glyph of the character is composed of v ( voiced labiodental fricative ) and ɾ ( voiced alveolar tap ). This symbol replaced the symbol , which was used unofficially as a phonetic symbol for this sound for 60 years.
