The Marienkapelle is the Roman Catholic Church of Brienz BE . It was built in 1941 as a branch church of the parish Guthirt in Meiringen at Feldstrasse 1, Brienz.

history

The parish of Interlaken also included the Oberhasli and the community until 1938 . In July 1938, the area from Oberried am Brienzersee with Brienz to the Grimsel Pass was separated and the Parish Rectorate Brienz-Meiringen was founded. From then on a pastor worked in Meiringen. Before that, from 1923 Pastor Merke from Interlaken held church services in the attic of the “Bären” hotel branch in Brienz.

In 1939 Vicar Seckinger received the order to look for building land for a chapel in Brienz. In September 1939, the Inland Mission acquired the school property in "Dindlen" from the Brienz community. Because of the outbreak of war, the construction of the chapel could not begin until autumn 1940. It was decided to build a wooden chapel, which was inaugurated on June 16, 1941. It was to be consecrated to Brother Klaus , who had just been beatified at the time , but this was not possible due to regulations from Rome; thus the church was consecrated to Mary Queen of Peace .

On March 22, 1974, the parish of Oberhasli-Brienz was founded by resolution of the parish assembly. This includes the municipalities of Brienz (BE), Brienzwiler , Gadmen , Guttannen , Hasliberg , Hofstetten bei Brienz , Innertkirchen , Meiringen and Oberried on Lake Brienz. The churches of the community are the Guthirt Church in Meiringen , the Marienkapelle in Brienz, the Christophoruskapelle in Hasliberg-Hohfluh , which was inaugurated in 1977, and the chapel at the Grimselhospiz, which was probably built in 1928.

Building description

The architects Stadler and Wilhelm from Zug and Hans Huggler from Brienz built a wooden structure on the solidly built basement using the local block construction . The brick bell tower has a pointed tent roof over an open wooden structure . The masonry is plastered white and the wooden nave has the local brown color. A double-arched loggia provides weather protection in front of the community hall in the basement . Access to the interior is on the side of the tower, where you can also take the stairwell to get to the basement and the gallery .

The low-looking room, completely clad in wood, has a retracted choir on the west side. The liturgical furniture is mainly made of wood. The window in the center of the choir contains an image of Christ with Latin banners and a bishop's coat of arms. Both side walls each have four double windows with lattice division and stained glass panes, some of which are painted with symbols or the donor's coat of arms. On the right side of the choir wall is a wood-carved Madonna and Child by Ernst Thomann (1908–2009). On the balustrade of the gallery is the prospectus of the organ inserted.
