Lady Chapel

The Marienkapelle is the second church building in the Stolberg district of Dorff , next to the parish church of St. Mary's Conception .

General

The Lady Chapel was built in the immediate vicinity of the Church of St. Mary's Conception. It had its origin in a Marian grotto. This no longer exists today, but its name is still in local usage.

history

Previous construction

The first historical reference dates back to 1904. At that time, a resident of Dorff stored grotto stones near the church, in the so-called church garden. It can be assumed that a Marian grotto was to be built with them. But this did not happen until 1938. It was inaugurated on the afternoon of the Sunday fair. A statue of the Heart of the Virgin Mary was placed in it, which had previously been in the church.

chapel

In December 1956, the residents of Dorff began to build a chapel on the site of the grotto . The construction time was about 1 year. At the beginning, a Madonna with the child, which was previously in the church, was placed in the chapel. After a short time she was replaced by a Fatima Madonna. Their installation was planned for October 13, 1958, but was due to the death of Pope Pius XII. postponed by two days. The Madonna was carried in procession through the entire parish area before it was brought to the chapel after several hours. In 1959 the Madonna received an additional crown and a rosary .

In 1982 significant damage to the chapel was discovered, most of which was due to the weather. By 1983, a new lighted entrance to the chapel was created and the interior was restored. A wrought iron gate was installed to protect the wind and the marble slab of the altar was replaced. The new roof construction was particularly noticeable. The old, flat roof was replaced by a tower-shaped roof.
