A first church in Schevenhütte, first mentioned in a document in 1525, was built between 1664 and 1668 with funds from the married couple Richmudis and Theodor von Lees. Previously there was only a small chapel at this point. This church was a simple hall church made of rubble stones with a bell tower in front . This building stood on today's church forecourt. First Schevenhütte served as Rector of the parish of St. Michael in Lendersdorf assumed and was on December 6, 1699 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Joseph Clemens of Bavaria separated from Lendersdorf and independent parish collected. At that time the church was still consecrated to the Holy Trinity .
As the population had increased significantly in the second half of the 19th century, it was decided to demolish the old church and build a new one. The plans for the new building were approved by the authorities of the archdiocese in 1886. The construction of today's parish church began in 1888 and the foundation stone was laid on July 22nd . In the fall of 1889, the construction work was finally finished. On 19 March 1890 the church by the Cologne Auxiliary Bishop and later Archbishop was Anthony Fischer consecrated . In 1891 the old church that stood across from today's main portal was demolished. The planning of the new Schevenhüttener parish church was the responsibility of the Aachen architect Peter Friedrich Peters . Today the parish of St. Josef belongs to the community of parishes (GdG) Stolberg-Süd in the diocese of Aachen .
architecture
St. Josef is a three-aisled hall church made of quarry stone in the neo-Gothic style with a three- story bell tower in front , a slightly protruding transept and a two-bay choir with a 5/8 end of the choir. The central nave and side aisles are separated by pointed arches that rest on four granite columns . The entire interior is spanned by ribbed vaults.
Furnishing
The original neo-Gothic furnishings were replaced by modern furnishings as part of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council . Of these, the stone folk altar should be mentioned. The organ deserves a special mention. It was taken over from the previous church and made in 1853 by the organ builders Kalscheuer from Nörvenich . The stained glass windows are works by Georg Meistermann and the pastor of Schevenhütte Herbert Falken from 1984 to 1990.
