location

The church building is located north of the Stolberg Lower Town in Velau on the corner of Franziskusstrasse and Kapuzinerweg.

history

As early as 1923 there were efforts to build a church in the north of the parish of St. Mary's Assumption. The city of Stolberg then gave the parish a building plot, which the church council accepted on November 21, 1923. However, a church was not built for the time being, which may have been due to the uncertain economic and political situation on the one hand and the outbreak of World War II in 1939 on the other .

Only after the war did the planning of the church in the north of Stolberg resume. In 1961 a suitable building plot could be acquired and in 1965, 42 years after the first considerations about the church building, construction began. The foundation stone was laid on March 28, 1965 and in 1967 the church was completed. On December 17, 1967, the church was consecrated . The plans were provided by the Aachen architect Hans Heinemann.

On October 4, 1967, St. Francis was elevated to a parish and completely separated from the mother parish of St. Mary's Assumption.

On January 1, 2010, the parish was dissolved as part of the restructuring measures of the diocese of Aachen and with the also dissolved parishes of St. Sebastian Atsch , St. Lucia Stolberg, St. Josef Donnerberg Herz Jesu Münsterbusch , St. Hermann Josef Liester and St. Mariä Himmelfahrt Stolberg-Mühle merged to form the new large parish St. Lucia Stolberg.
