Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Münsterbusch

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is a Roman Catholic branch church in the Stolberg district of Münsterbusch in the city region of Aachen in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The church is consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and is a subsidiary church of the St. Lucia Stolberg Parish, which was founded on January 1, 2010.

location

The church building is located in the center of Münsterbusch on Prämienstraße. The church is not oriented towards the east as usual, but towards the west.

history

Münsterbusch always belonged to the parish of St. Hubertus Büsbach and did not have its own church. Since zinc and glass works were built in Münsterbusch in the 19th century, the population grew rapidly. At the end of the 19th century the population had grown tenfold. On the initiative of the St. Heinrich Schützenbruderschaft Münsterbusch, a church building association was founded in 1887, which now collected money to build a church. In 1900 the money was enough to start building the church. In 1901 Münsterbusch was raised to the position of rectorate within the Büsbach parish, which now resulted in property independence. Just four years later, on October 1, 1905, the rectorate was raised to an independent parish and completely separated from the Büsbach mother church .

After 105 years of existence, the Münsterbusch parish was dissolved on January 1, 2010 as part of the restructuring measures of the Aachen diocese and with the also dissolved parishes of St. Sebastian Atsch , St. Franziskus Stolberg, St. Lucia Stolberg, St. Hermann Josef Liester , St Josef Donnerberg and St. Mariä Himmelfahrt Stolberg-Mühle merged to form the new large parish St. Lucia Stolberg.

Building history

Today's church is the first church building in Münsterbusch, before the place had no church of its own. The foundation stone was laid on June 29, 1900 and the church was completed by the middle of 1901, so that the first Holy Mass could be read on August 11, 1901 . The plans were created by the Aachen architect Henry van Kann .

The church was damaged during World War II . This damage could be repaired by 1949.

From 1979 to 1980 the church was radically redesigned according to plans by the Aachen architect Matthias Kleuters. The interior was completely gutted. The vaults were torn down and the supporting pillars of the vaults were removed. Then a wooden ceiling was put in place. The choir was separated from the nave by a wall and converted into a sacristy . The altar was moved in front of the north wall of the nave and the pews were placed in a semicircle around the altar. This gave the interior its current modern form. The exterior of the church remained unchanged during the renovation work. The solemn inauguration with consecration of the new altar took place on October 5, 1980.

Building description

Herz Jesu is a flat-roofed brick hall in five axes in the neo-Romanesque style . Until the radical renovation of the interior, the nave had three aisles and was vaulted. The three- story bell tower has moved in and is located on the east side of the building. In the west is the old choir, closed on five sides, which has been used as a sacristy since the renovation. Inside, the church is characterized by modernity , while the exterior of the church still clearly shows the neo-Romanesque architectural style. A total of 200 seats are available for the faithful.

Furnishing

In the interior there is modern equipment, most of which was purchased in the course of the redesign in 1979/80. The celebration altar is made of marble and was made according to a design by Matthias Kleuters in 1980. The sacrament house with tabernacle is a work by the Kohlscheider artist Peter Bücken from 1980. He also created the ambo and the cross in the chancel.

Most of the stained glass windows were created by the Alsdorf glass painter Ludwig Schaffrath . The abstract windows partly symbolize life and hope, repentance, the four elements and the moon. The other part of the window symbolizes raw materials that were partially mined in Münsterbusch in earlier times: iron, copper, shell panels, rock crystal and silver.

The windows at the entrances and the rose window in the tower are works by Josef Höttges from 1951. These figural windows show St. Archangel Raphael , St. Christophorus and an ornament (rosette).
