location

The church building is located in Stolberg-Mühle, also called Unterstolberg . It is on Salmstrasse, which is the main shopping street in Stolberg. The Vichtbach flows a few meters further east.

history

Stolberg-Mühle never had its own house of worship. The city district always belonged to the parish of St. Lucia, Oberstolberg . Due to increasing industrialization , more and more people settled in Mühle, so that the desire for their own church soon arose. On January 17, 1850, residents first founded the “Association for the Building of a Catholic Church on the Mill in Stolberg”. The association was so successful that in 1851 it had raised the money it needed to build a church and maintain its own clergyman. After the church was built in 1855, it was initially a branch church of St. Lucia. Despite the resistance of the responsible pastor of St. Lucia, a separate rector for the Assumption was appointed on August 29, 1860 . The elevation to an independent parish and separation from St. Lucia took place on August 19, 1888.

During the period of National Socialism , from 1933 onwards, resistance to the Nazi regime developed in the parish, at times fierce. At that time the pastor was Hubert Roderburg.

In 1967 the new pastoral care district St. Franziskus was set up within the parish, which was separated in 1970 and made a parish.

In the course of the restructuring measures of the diocese of Aachen , to which Stolberg has belonged since 1930, the parish of St. Mary's Assumption was established together with the parishes of Herz Jesu Münsterbusch , St. Franziskus Stolberg, St. Lucia Stolberg, St. Hermann Josef Liester , St. Josef Donnerberg and St. Sebastian Atsch dissolved on January 1, 2010 and merged into the new large parish St. Lucia Stolberg. Curiously enough, the parish church was not St. Lucia in Oberstolberg, but St. Mary's Assumption.

Building history

After the church building association had raised enough money, construction of the new church could begin in 1851. In 1855 it was completed. Just 20 years later, the previously single-nave hall church had become too small, whereupon an expansion was decided. In 1874 the south aisle was added and the north aisle followed from 1876 to 1877. At the end of the renovation and expansion measures, the central nave was restored in 1883 and 1884. The plans for the expansion measures were drawn up by the Cologne architect Heinrich Wiethase . The ceremonial consecration took place on September 21, 1889 . However, at that time the church did not have a bell tower . In 1896 the towers were finally built.

In 1944, the parish church was badly damaged in World War II . The spiers collapsed and the vaults were destroyed. Only the vault in the choir was preserved. The reconstruction lasted until 1953. The towers received low tent roofs and the interior a flat ceiling. In 1972 the interior was rebuilt according to the new requirements of the Second Vatican Council . The plans for this came from the two architects Paul Breuer and Josef Bock from Stolberg.

Building description

St. Mariä Himmelfahrt is a three-aisled, five-bay hall church made of bricks in the neo-Gothic style . Due to the urban planning conditions, the building is not easted, the choir is located in the west. In the east, the nave is flanked by two three-storey towers, with the two-part main entrance in between. In the west, a choir closed on five sides adjoins the central nave. The interior is spanned by a flat folded ceiling, only in the choir has the original ribbed vault been preserved.

Furnishing

The furnishings of the church are largely influenced by the post-war period. The original equipment was almost completely lost in 1944.

The altar in the choir is a work by PH Breuer from 1972 made of bluestone. Behind the altar is a cross made of silver , enamel , rock crystals and a gilded crucifix by an artist called Polders from Kevelaer from 1975. The tabernacle is a work by the Stolberg goldsmith Ludwig Mohnen. Albert Sous created the font with a lid . Another cross, two altar candlesticks and the Easter candlestick come from him. He created these objects around 1960. A Pietà from the 19th century and 14 Stations of the Cross from 1886 have been preserved from the historical furnishings . The stained glass windows in the choir are works by Hermann Josef Winter and the windows in the nave were designed by the glass painter Johannes Beeck in 1953.
