Wooden Church of the Virgin Mary in Broumov

The cemetery church of the Virgin Mary under the Linden (Czech Hřbitovní kostel Panny Marie v Broumově ) is a Roman Catholic church at the city cemetery of Broumov (German Braunau ). It is one of the oldest preserved wooden structures in the Czech Republic . In 2008 the church was declared a National Cultural Monument.

history

A church at this point is first mentioned in 1383. In June 1421 Broumov was besieged by Hussite troops under the leadership of Vincent von Wartenberg ( Čeněk z Vartemberka ) and Hynek Kruschina von Lichtenburg ( Hynek Krušina z Lichtenburka ). The church was partially destroyed. A fire in 1449 caused further damage. It was then rebuilt under the direction of Benedictine monks from the Braunau monastery . It is debatable to what extent preserved parts of the previous building were integrated into the building. In 1550 and 1811, damage to the central tower was repaired. In the middle of the 18th century, a bell tower was erected above the choir, which does not tower over the roof ridge. At the same time new altars were purchased and a sacristy was added.

Building description

The single-nave church is made entirely of wood. The half-timbered construction made of oak beams is protected by a steep, shingle-covered hipped roof from which a small tower protrudes in the middle. The walls and ceiling were planked with wood. An open gallery runs around the church on three sides ; its roof is flatter than that of the nave.

The interior of the church has a length of 21.1 meters, a width of 8.7 meters and a height of 5.7 meters. The ceiling and interior walls were adorned with white stencil painting. Plants, hunting ( hare, deer ) and heraldry ( griffin , Silesian eagle with the letter S ) were chosen as motifs .

Altars

The main altar dates from the middle of the 18th century. Flanked by angels is the Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary of Mater Amabilis Braunae (German mother of love from Braunau ) in the center.

The left side altar was originally designed by Nikolaus Schlögel in 1696 as the altar of St. Anna built. Today he is dedicated to St. Dedicated to Joseph.

The right side altar is dedicated to St. Dedicated to John of Nepomuk . The initials refer to Jakob Matthes Köppel von Capellen (died 1678) as a carpenter.

The altars were rebuilt in the form they now have in the Rococo period .

painting

The painting of the Virgin Mary ( oil painting 109 × 260 cm ) was painted in 1609 by the Braunau abbot Wolfgang Selender . The top of the picture shows the Virgin Mary with the Holy Trinity and nine angels bearing signs of Christ's mourning. In the middle part the Bohemian national saints ( Wenceslaus , Iwan , Veit , Sigismund , Ludmilla , Adalbert , Kyrill and Method , Prokop and the Five Holy Brothers ) are represented. The epitaph was created for Heinrich Maxim Fabricia, his wife Dorothey nee Clamtin and their children in 1665.

Outside gallery

In the church gallery there are nine wooden panels containing chronicles from the years 1542 to 1847, mainly about fire (including 1549, 1757) and other disasters (e.g. locusts in 1542, destruction of the church tower by storm in 1550, floods in 1570, plague 1582, 1586 and 1632, 1779 invasion of the Prussian troops in the War of the Bavarian Succession , 1810 and 1845).

Along the outer wall there are tombstones from abandoned graves from the Renaissance period .

Other valuable art objects from the interior are now in Broumov Abbey . Some of these have been replaced by copies or reproductions.
