history

inner space

Not far from the current church, a chapel is said to have stood in the "In der Helle" area as early as the Middle Ages . Already this was Maria consecrated. It is said to have contained a carved altarpiece on which Mary was depicted on a skull and the crescent moon with the Christ child. At that time the Provost von Himmelpforten had the right to elect the chaplain of the church after he had bought this right from the provost of Bremen .

Building history

The current Marienkirche was consecrated on May 22nd, 1636 according to the inscription above the eastern entrance door and is a simple, single - nave half-timbered building with a four-sided apse in the east and a wooden bell tower in the west. The weather vane on the tower bears the number 697 (probably referring to the year 1697).

Extensive renovations took place at the end of the 19th century, 1958–1962 and 1974/75.

Furnishing

Most of the furnishings today, including the windows, date from the mid- 19th century .

The crucifix dates from the 19th century, but the body is much older and could still come from the previous church or from another church.

Christening bowl and lectern

The baptismal font and lectern are both more recent. The lectern has been adorned with hand-woven hangings since 2006, showing a tree of life and quoting Exodus 3:14 “I am who I am”. There is also a hanging on the altar, on which the tree of life continues.

The rainbow-colored baptismal font, created in Denmark, was built in 2009. In the middle a dove of peace is depicted, the bowl is quartered according to the cardinal points. Biblical stories are depicted.

Stalls

The current stalls were built in 1975. The rebuilt chairs with lattice windows to the left and right of the altar were created in the 18th century .
